Truck hitch information and safety

Truck HitchWhen picking ou thte correcttruck hitch accessories, it's important to reference the owner's manuals for your vehicle, trailer, and other parts of your system of towing. You will need to be knowledgeable about the capabilities and limitations of each part so you can choose which discount trailer hitch best suits your needs. Specifically, you'll need to know gross trailer weight and tongue weight, so you know to never exceed the lowest rating of any one part. Trailer hitches come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles, and are generally classified as weight-carrying or weight-distributing. Weight-carrying hitches are used when the trailer weight is up to and including a maximum of 3,500 lbs., and the tongue weight is carried directly on the rear of the tow vehicle. Weight distributing hitches are attachments that slide into Class 3/4 or Class 5 weight carrying receiver hitches, and redistribute the tongue weight. Weight distributing hitches are normally used for up to 10,000 lbs. In this case, tongue weight is redistributed from the rear axle to the front, providing more vehicle stability while towing.

Discount Trailer HitchReceiver hitches are the most used type of truck hitch, and are generally what is found on most trucks, SUV's, vans, and RV's. This type of discount trailer hitch is the best choice for those who want to use bike racks, ski racks and cargo racks. They are available in two size openings, 1 1/4" and 2". Class 1 and 2 receiver hitches can only be used as the weight carrying type, while Class 3 and 4 receiver hitches can be used either as the weight carrying or weight distributing type. They're not restricted to the back of your vehicle, either: receivers can be installed on the front to launch boats, attach bike racks, or mount a winch. Receiver hitches are compatible with a trailer hitch adapter.

Change it up with a trailer hitch adapter

Receiver hitches can be converted from a standard 1-1/4 inch receiver to a 2 inch receiver or vice versa by using a trailer hitch adapter. These are not intended for towing applications, but rather for bicycle and other cargo racks.
