Nerf Bar InstallationWe often get the same kind of questions here at Truck Champ about nerf bar installation. Here are the top six.

1. My brackets are not lining up with the holes in the step bars.

If the brackets aren’t lining up, it usually means you have one or more brackets mounted in the incorrect spot on the truck or that the bars need to be switched side for side.

2.  My bolts are not the correct size.

If you have a GMC or Chevy truck model year 2006 and up, you will need to reuse the factory body bolts to install the main brackets.  Incorrect bolt sizes can also happen when there is a cover or plastic grommet covering the bolt holes.  These bolt holes can also sometimes collect rust deposits and the threads may need to be cleaned in order to fit the bolts in the holes.Steps bars, brackets, nuts & bolts

3.  My bars are thumping and/or rattling.

Noises usually occur when there is metal hitting metal.  This can be solved by loosening all connections and adjusting the brackets so they clear all metal around the bracket. You can use a white lithium or regular grease between any metal-to-metal connections. You will also want to make sure all connections are tightened properly.

4.  My step pads are not lining up with the truck doors.

Step bars aligned with truck doorPads not lining up properly usually happens because the bars are on the wrong side of the truck and need to be switched.  Also check the mounting brackets; sometimes they are mounted in an incorrect spot or hole.

5.  My brackets are not fitting according to the instructions.

Sometimes the photos in the instructions may not exactly match your specific truck; some of the holes may look different.  On some applications, the driver’s and passenger’s side brackets can be identical as they can mount on either side of the truck.  Always make sure you look at the markings on each bracket to be sure they are on the correct side of the vehicle.  A good tip to follow when assembling anything is to always look at your parts list.  Make sure the correct amount of each piece or part is there.

6.  What do I torque my bolts to?

Most body bolts will need to be tightened to 65 foot-pounds.  Use a torque wrench to install the step bar bolts and tighten them until the lock washer is compressed.  Then turn the bolts another half or quarter-turn.Torque step bars

Had them installed in 20 minutes per side. They are everything they were advertised to be. And about half the $$$$ that everyone else wanted. My only complaint, both pictures in the instructions that came with your step bars and the video of Gramdma installing them show the black plastic protective end caps still in place when installed…. The black plastic end caps have “Remove before Installation”????????? Oh and maybe some torque specs…Other than that, Love your Bars,Really
